World Health Day: Taking Control of Chronic Diseases
April 07,2026 (Edit) Wondfo

Chronic diseases are among the most significant global health challenges today, affecting hundreds of millions of people and placing a long-term burden on individuals, families, and healthcare systems.
This World Health Day, we highlight the importance of early detection, continuous monitoring, and proactive management. Four key conditions—Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Diabetes, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), and Thyroid Disorders—demonstrate how timely diagnosis can make a meaningful difference in long-term outcomes.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints, leading to pain, swelling, stiffness, and progressive disability.
Effective RA management relies on a combination of clinical evaluation and laboratory testing. Key biomarkers include:
· Rheumatoid Factor (RF): Commonly used in autoimmune disease assessment
· Anti-CCP: A highly specific marker for early diagnosis
· C-Reactive Protein (CRP): Indicates inflammation and disease activity
· Anti-Streptolysin O (ASO): Helps identify potential infection-related factors

Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels. If not properly managed, it can lead to serious complications, including cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, nerve damage, and vision loss.
Key biomarkers play a central role in diabetes diagnosis and management:
· HbA1c: Reflects long-term blood glucose control
· Insulin: Helps evaluate pancreatic function and insulin resistance
· C-Peptide: Supports assessment of endogenous insulin production

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Chronic Kidney Disease is often referred to as a “silent disease” because it progresses gradually with few or no symptoms in its early stages. By the time symptoms appear, significant—and often irreversible—kidney damage may have already occurred.
Laboratory testing plays a vital role in identifying early kidney damage and monitoring disease progression:
· Microalbumin (MAU): An early indicator of kidney damage, especially in patients with diabetes or hypertension
· Cystatin C (CysC): A sensitive marker for estimating glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)
· β2-Microglobulin (β2-MG): Helps assess renal filtration function and detect kidney injury

Thyroid Disorders

Thyroid dysfunction often goes unnoticed, yet it can significantly impact metabolism, energy levels, weight, and heart rate.
Conditions such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can affect daily life and, if left untreated, may lead to more serious complications. Globally, an estimated 200 million people are affected by thyroid disorders.
A comprehensive panel of biomarkers supports accurate diagnosis and monitoring:
· TSH, fT3, fT4, T3, T4: Core indicators of thyroid function
· Anti-TG, Anti-TPO: Important markers for autoimmune thyroid diseases
· Thyroglobulin (TG): Used in specific thyroid condition monitoring
